Macaron Flop!

©Kara Rosenlund So, we all know that macarons are the new cupcake. People take them very seriously… like some sort of colourful culinary bling. We also all know they are tricky to make and even something as slight as the humidity on any given day can deflate a batch of these pretty little things. Saying all of this I bring you Donna Hay’s Almond Macaron with Chocolate filling Packet Mix. That’s right. My girlfriend Sally bought me this **packet mix** last week ( I know what you are thinking, but c’mon, if Donna thinks its ok, than its ok.. right?)… so I tried it out. I think the low rate of success had more to do with me rather than Donna’s mix. Donna’s mix was brilliant, my results were poor. I don’t think we make a good team. Im going to give it another crack next week! K x

Penguin Books Australia

A very exciting cookbook is about to be released very soon! Five weeks to be exact! Can’t wait to share some of the shots with you that Nikole Furnari captured and I styled! Told you it was exciting! Exciting! More to come soon! K xx

Eat Cake and Be Merry

©Kara Rosenlund Eat Cake and Be Merry… I sure will be doing that tomorrow… and you should too! I have found lots of different shapes and sizes of baking tins for you to bake that perfect weekend cake in. I even managed to track down what I consider our ‘signature’ cake tin – the love heart… in THREE different sizes: small, large and extra large.. now that’s a lot of love in one cake! See you tomorrow! So excited! K xx

Stock Sneak Peek

©Kara Rosenlund Would you believe I am actually doing a last minute source for tomorrow’s market. I have been invited somewhere very secretive and very exclusive to have a poke around, so lets hope I find some delights for us all! Above are a couple of shots of some new stock. Old English platters, perfect proportions for roast chicken with heavy silver cutlery. Trio of white French plates with gold trim. Gorgeous old Tinware for baking cakes and making bread and also a set of cookie cutters. Generous mule coloured French Napkins with silver cake lifters and pretty cake plates. Enamel colanders in white and also cream! Plenty more to come! K xx

Juice Me

©Kara Rosenlund Citrus Juicer… do you have one… do you want one… I think everyone should have one… in particular a proper heavy moulded glass one! Don’t get me wrong, I have tried others, I take my citrus very seriously you know. I have a Philippe Starck ‘Juicy Salif’ stashed in the cupboard (looonng way back in the cupboard though, you know that spot, once it goes there is never comes back.. one of those spots), I also have tried an Italian manual citrus press too (the clamp broke) and I have also been known to use my good ol’ bare hands. But nothing beats my moulded glass juicer. Whenever we sell one of our glass citrus juicers at Travelling Wares I literally have a grin from ear to ear, its as though silently you and I have a secret that we both are in on – and that is that they may try but nothing can beat a well made classic! K xx

The Kitchen Reveal!

©All Images Kara Rosenlund Here you have it… finally the kitchen is finished…. a few of you have asked me while doing Travelling Wares at the market whether I use and decorate with similar objects to what I sell. As you can see the answer is a firm yes! I love combining the old with the new. I definitely like to keep cooking tools at arms reach, so if they are going to be out they need to look beautiful too! So, we are two rooms down so far, if you missed the bathroom here it is. Watch out floor boards, we are coming with a sander and gusto! P.S Below are a couple of before shots.

Hello Aunty!

©Kara Rosenlund That’s right, I am now a proud Aunty…… Aunty Kara, hehehe, I like it. I have never been an Aunt before, being an only child I wasn’t too sure if becoming an Aunt was on the cards for me, however Timothy O’s clever brother and sister-in-law welcomed a gorgeous little boy into the world this week! So, in pure decadent Aunty style, I decided to make an outrageously high cake to celebrate and eat a slice for breakfast….. bring on the sleep overs I say!!! K xx P.S I’m so in love with this little glass cake stand that arrived this week… not sure if it will make it on to the trestles at the market…

Wholesome Sunday

©Kara Rosenlund A big THANK YOU to all of our lovely customers who came to the Powerhouse Famers Market on Saturday, it was great to see you all! What a cracker of a gorgeous day! I hope you have had a chance to use your new found treasures over the weekend – baking tins, silver cutlery, milk jugs, plates and more! I whipped up a quick roast chicken lunch yesterday in between tree lopping with Timothy O and a couple of furniture deliveries. I love a good ol’ classic Sunday lunch, so wholesome. K xx

Lemon Chicken Sandwiches with Tarragon

©Image by Studio Sixty I recently served these Chicken and Lemon Sandwiches with Tarragon at our 1930’s themed Engagement Party and they were a smash! If lemon zing, creamy mayonnaise and tarragon are your thing keep reading! These gorgeous little chive encrusted triangles are one of my favourite things to eat; they look impressive for an event and taste very refreshing. They are even great for a casual on the run weekday sandwich too. The original recipe is from Donna Hay (I know, I know, she really is too good! She made these for Oprah!), though I like to ‘french’ mine up a bit by adding lemon zest and tarragon and leaving out Donna’s mint and basil. Here we go… Lemon, Tarragon and Chicken Sandwiches Makes 24 delicious little triangles INGREDIENTS 12 Slices of White Bread Soft Butter for Spreading 2 Cups of Chopped Cooked Chicken (320grams) 3/4 cup of Whole Egg Mayonnaise (I use the Kewpie Japanese Mayonnaise) 2 Tablespoons of Lemon Juice 2 Tablespoons of Lemon Zest 1 Handful of Tarragon Sea Salt and Cracked Papper Extra Mayonnaise for spreading Handful of Finely Chopped Chives METHOD Spread one side of each bread slice with butter. Place the chicken, mayonnaise, lemon zest and juice, tarragon, salt and pepper in a bowl and mix to combine. Divide chicken mixture between half the bread slices and top with remaining bread slices. Cut sandwiches into small triangles and brush one side with the extra mayonnaise. Press the mayonnaise side of the sandwich into the chives (I keep mine on a plate). Serve.

White Sneak Peek

This one is for all you white lovers out there (myself included!). Here is a sneak peek at what will be available this Saturday at the Powerhouse Farmers Market. A beautiful array of white ware and pale wood for the kitchen. I personally think produce should only be served on white plates, just like an art gallery with white walls, there are just some things you shouldn’t mess with! K xx ©Kara Rosenlund

Ode to Enamel

I love old original enamelware! I love how practical and utilitarian the approach is with enamel – no nonsense. Plus I think it looks pretty attractive too, especially the white palette! It looks as though I will have quite the collection come Saturday on offer at Travelling Wares, we have colanders, ladles, skimmers, pitchers, and some stunning old sets of white storage canisters. All kitchens needs a dash of enamel! K xx © Kara Rosenlund

Eat Cake

There is no denying it – this week is a big one; actually, who am I kidding – its not big, its huge! Apart from having Travelling Wares at the Powerhouse Farmers Market this Saturday from 6am, we are also hosting our 1930’s themed Engagement Party from 2pm til dusk at a gorgeous little old croquet club by the sea. I’m off to have a chat to a local baker about creating something similar to the above shot! Usually I would indulge and make my own cake, though I think that might just inch me over the edge this week. Talk soon! K xx
